A Short History of
Chorus Niagara

In March 1963, a performance of Bach’s “ Christ Lag In Todesbanden” marked the debut of the St. Catharines ( later Niagara ) Symphony Chorus. Formed to complement the Symphony Orchestra, what began with 24 voices eventually grew to today’s 100.

Until 1980 the choir was under the direction of Symphony Conductors Leonard Perlman, Milton Barnes and Leonard Atherton. Then followed an interim period with Roberto de Clara.

Upon the appointment of Ermanno Florio as Music Director of the orchestra in 1983, Ian Grundy became Chorus Master, conducting some concerts. Major choral works in the Niagara Symphony’s Masters’ Series were conducted by the Music Director.

In 1989, Ermanno Florio and the Board of Directors of the Symphony Association invited Robert Cooper to become Conductor of the Chorus. Moving in a new direction, they gave him complete artistic control in that capacity.

Since his arrival, the Chorus has doubled its membership and established an unprecedented standard of excellence. There is strong audience support.

In 1997, the re- named Chorus Niagara became an independent organization.

A glance at the Chorus’ repertoire, reveals a broad spectrum of standard choral works, premieres and commissions, and newer 20th and 21st Century music.

The Chorus Niagara Childrens’ Choir, Side by Side Chorale and Vocal Workshops are successful initiatives undertaken by the organization.
